Outerbanks

I finally made it to the Outerbanks in North Carolina. It's pretty much the only thing I heard people talk about while on my mission. Too bad it was a part of the "other" mission.

People were right though. It is gorgeous!

We started up at Elizabeth City and made our way down the Outer Banks. Here's a map to give you an idea of where it is and why it's called the Outer Banks.

We started at Kitty Hawk and made our way all to Ocracoke.

Kitty Hawk is where the Wright Brothers first flew. Here we are playing around on the bronze replica.

Our next stop was not too far from Nags Head. It's called Jockey Ridge and it's one of the largest living (natural) sand dunes in the U.S.

We stayed the night in Buxton and had a place right on the beach. Since it was still technically "off season" we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. We woke up and watched the sunrise over the Atlantic and then walked the beach. This is where we found the pretty shells.

We then saw Cape Hatteras. The tallest lighthouse in the US.

Took a ferry over to Ocracoke Island.

Then saw the Ocracoke lighthouse. This is where the famous pirate Blackbeard hung out and I think eventually killed.

Oh and one of the highlights we saw while driving was watching people on the sound side of the banks kite surf. They were catching some major air. Very cool.
